"Hey, Dude, Surf's up!"

There once was a lonely old pirate, who sang a pirate song. He sang his song until a surfer came along Oh ho ho, hee hee hee Hey, dude, surf's up!. OHHHH, there was once was a. . . .
You might hear your children singing some form of this song. It has many interruptions to the poor old pirate an octopus, a singing mermaid, a police officer, a surfer, a helicopter, a shark, a submarine and I think that might be it. It's a very fun song and the children have some to really like it. My mom gave me two Cd's from a teacher she worked with this past school year. They are called Alphapop 1 and Alphapop 2. They have some older nursery rhymes set to more r&b/hip hop music, as well as, a lot more reading and alphabet songs on the Cd's. I was glad I found them in my daughters school stuff we had stored away. It is nice to have more of a choice in our song selections.

We began our day today with centers and breakfast. We had a little bit of trouble with running around and keeping items where they were supposed to be, so we lost a few toys this morning. The two larger trucks got put away for the day, they might come back out in the morning for centers. I have not quite decided yet, it will depend upon listening ears and following directions of the campers. Today was a bit of a rough day with following directions but we sure did have several good helpers. We have a select few that are ALWAYS stand out helpers and ALWAYS the first to follow the directions given. Those kiddos truly make it much easier on us when we have several who have a hard time with those two items.

After breakfast, we began with our welcome song and we sang only a few songs this morning. We have just a short window of time on swim days to do much more than call roll. We had every one get their belongings and we headed out for sunscreen. Once all the children were covered in sunscreen, we began our trek over to the YMCA. It wasn't quite as bad this morning on our walk over to the Y. It did begin to get more muggy on the way back. It progressively got worse as the day went on, but we tried to keep them inside, for the most part, later in the afternoon.

We had lunch after swimming at the YMCA then rest time. Please remember to always send in extra clothing for your children each day~especially, on swim day. The children are VERY, VERY COLD in the cafeteria and when they have to stay in their wet clothes it makes it much worse on them. After rest time, we had a little bit of wake up time before snack today.

The snack today was actually something they got to create. They made it then they were able to eat it. It wasn't what I was trying to work on, but it was MUCH better than my idea. Ms. Rachel came up with this plan and it worked out a lot better than my idea. The children rolled their pretzel in peanut butter and then got to roll that into many different types of cereal. We made our own mix of cereal. It was like a carnival creation of a snack. They really liked the snack and wanted several more. We may have to do that again another day.

We made clown noses after snack time. Unfortunately, several children left just as we finished up snack and were taking a bathroom break so not every one made a clown nose. If we have time between games, making sundaes and the cook out tomorrow we will try to get them made. I cannot make any promises though.

We have most of the Kamp Kermit Festival set up already for tomorrow :-D We are very excited and hope that many of you come to join your children! If you have any questions please call the front desk at the YMCA and they can direct you to a contact person. Thank you and have a wonderful evening!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ms. Keira"The Crazy Dancin' Clown"

We love when we have visitors come to camp and see us. Today the children had a visitor among them and didn't even know it until after nap time. . .We began our day with the normal routine of breakfast, centers, role call, singing and bathroom break. We then split up into groups and began a craft while the other group went outside to play. One group came inside to play because it was extremely muggy outside today. We then switched all activities after about 30-40 minutes and allowed each group to participate in what the other group was doing. Every one was able to make a 'popcorn bag' for snack later this week. After group activities were over it was time for LUNCH!!!!! One of the kiddos favorite activities at camp is to eat, eat, eat! haha, I think every one enjoys a good meal though.

We had a wonderful nap time today, for the most part. Just about every one zonked out early today and slept hard. This week they have taken very good naps, it must be the heat and fact that barely any one slept last week. After nap time/rest time, every one took a bathroom break (as they woke up) and then got their snack.

Our special visitor "Arrived" after snack just as we began face painting. Ms. Keira our Crazy Dancing Clown came down the hall all dolled up for the children dancing away. The kids were laughing and running to her, having such a wonderful time. They were so distracted with her that they forgot they were waiting to get their faces painted. Each child was able to get a photo with her (if they wanted, some REFUSED) and all were able to get their face painted (some REFUSED this too). We will be having face painting and hair spray colors on Friday. If your child is upset they chose not to do this today, then they have a chance on Friday.

Tomorrow is swim day at the YMCA, we leave Doss at 9:20am. Please come dressed and ready to swim.

Friday is our first "Cook-out". We will be providing the Grilled Chicken and Hot Dogs and we ask that you please bring one of these three : Fruits, Veggies (raw with ranch) or Pretzels/baked chips. You are welcome to bring the item that is easiest for you but remember we won't need 100 bags of chips. . .We hope to see you all there! We will also be having several Festival style games and you are more than welcome to join your children. The groups will be traveling to the stations to participate and after nap time we will be having a"Create Your Own Sundae" snack. One of our parents works for Valley Dairy Freeze and she will be setting up for us here at camp! The kids will enjoy this special treat! Have a great evening and we will see you tomorrow!

Monday, Monday. . .

Today began another week at Kamp Kermit, but this week begins the Kamp Kermit Festival! The children are excited because the field trip for the week is Calypso Cove, a favorite of many and we end the week with a festival/cook-out. We began our week with the Summer Reading Program with the Louisville Free Public Library. Today was the last Monday that they will be with us. They are rounding up their summer and winding down the summer reading program for the year. We have enjoyed the program coming out to us every Monday and I am proud of all the children who earned their prizes for reading ten books.

We were also able to create our own festival "posters" today and the children were more detailed than I had seen them most of the summer. I was so very proud of each of them as they worked for more than an hour on their prized artwork. Several of the boys, in particular, really took some extra time on their work. There were a few boys that normally are finished in about two seconds that took the entire time to complete their work today and then even explained to each counselor what was on their paper. It was good to see them really get into what they were doing. It was originally supposed to be a clown hat but they were so detailed we were unable to make them into hats, so we just decided to create festival posters out of them instead. Tomorrow we will be working on our own clown noses to wear on Wednesday (in case you have no costume or anything to dress up in) and also a popcorn bag to hold snack in for Thursday.

We ended up the day after rest time with a few games involving our character values we have here at the YMCA. They involve colors and characters. We have been practicing these through out the summer. We were actually quite shocked at what GREAT answers we received today during one of the games. These kiddos are very smart and listening a little more than we gave them credit for.

I hope you all have a wonderful night. I will see you tomorrow morning.

Please don't forget to be at camp before 9:30am. Drop off if 7-9am. We need to get sunscreen on all the campers before we head out to Calypso Cove, Call role, take a bathroom break and load up the bus. I truly appreciate all your cooperation and helpfulness.

Thank you!

Let the Festival Begin!

Kamp Kermit Festival

Reading Program
*Create our own festival poster.

Tuesday: *Field trip to Calypso Cove.

Thursday: *Swimming at the YMCA.
*Water games outside before nap time.
*Create your very own “Festival/Circus” picture and it will be completely edible!
